thanks so much for joining us. here's brian now with the news edge at 11:00. start off with a winter weather alert. as if sandy wasn't enough, residents in the northeast dealing with a second dose of disaster. 60,000 people lost power today again after yesterday's nor'easter and new york officials are about to make a drastic decision to curb the gas crisis. will thomas joins us now with more. >> the same region devastated by sandy last week just can't get a break, at least not yet. now a nor'easter has made recovery efforts more difficult and snowfall and outages just adds to the problem. it is so bad there is gasoline rationing in new york city and long island. i'll explain how that's working after we look at what's going on. let's roll this. sanitation trucks are clearing piles of debris on staten island, this ighborhood a full mile from the ocean dealing with 12 feet of water, 12 feet, all across the region hundreds of thousands still

freezing in the dark. millions of people, yes, got their power back after sandy tore through only to lose it again from the nor'easter. it dumped up to a foot of snow in some parts of new jersey alone. lots of stories of kindness and generosity, but you know what? a lot of these victims are frustrated wondering how they're going to go on. >> the reason the progress has slowed is because in the impacted areas you basically have to go building by building to make sure what buildings can take the power and what buildings can't take the power before you return power to that area. >> it is meticulous work indeed. so back to the gasoline rationing, drivers have been under a mandatory gas rationing situation since sandy hit 10 days ago restricting people to buying fuel on either odd or even numbered days depending on their license numbers. the big issue? getting those big fuel trucks into the areas that still need a massive clean-up.

as the northeast recovers let's check in with sue palka in the weather center. will conditions be getting any better for those guys up there? they'll get a nice break. the storm is about out of the new york area, certainly cleared new jersey. winds have settled down, still pretty cold, though. let me give you a look on satellite and radar. for the most part, they're getting some effects on cape cod and across maine. that is the last of it. there's still a bit of cloud cover. winds are getting much better. winds still peaking out at 44 miles per hour in nantucket. you go down the coast to montauk, 26-mile an hour gust, islip 29, jfk a gust to 29. we're still experiencing some of the winds as well, those gusty winds we have being a combination of the pressure between the nor'easter and an area of high pressure building in. so we definitely are feeling that as well. what they need in the northeast is a break. a big break will happen as the

nor'easter exits, we'll see warmer and sunnier air push in. while it will only be in the 50s tomorrow, low 60s could be doable for the weekend. they will be for us. another quick look at some of those impressive snow totals with some 1 foot totals coming out of central new jersey to southeastern new york. an architecture firm in columbia maryland that's known for building communities has taken on a project to rebuild some of the damaged homes and buildings of the today they loaded up a giant truck with relief supplies for victims. audrey barnes has the story. >> reporter: in the parking lot outside waldon studio architects in columbia, maryland, a relief effort to help victims of hurricane sandy is taking off. >> when you ask for stuff for children and babies, people really want to help there. >> reporter: vicki thurston got the idea of loading up a truck with supplies after

watching news reports about how hurricane sandy has impacted people in new york and new jersey. it's that same feeling she had after hurricane katrina hit new orleans. >> my son and i went and helped gut houses after the hurricane there and saw how devastating it is to people. so it's kind of like we got to do something. >> reporter: her boss ravi waldon didn't hesitate to rent a truck for the mission. >> she said can i do this? all i did was say okay. i think it shows the power of what one person's idea can do. >> reporter: after sending out a few e-mails and handing out flyers people started to come. >> i want to help out. my heart goes out to them and my prayers. >> most of the places up there were saying they had plenty of clothes. >> reporter: helping out is in thurston's blood. this mother of four and grandmother of two has been to guatemala twice recently on missions to build housessen and rebuild communities there. on monday she'll be ushering

this truckload of relief supplies up north thanks to the generosity of people in our area. >> what i love the most about it is seeing everybody coming together. >> reporter: a heart warming sight after the tough political season that was dividing communities. >> you do something like this and everybody cares and wants to participate and be part of it and all that other stuff, you know, just goes to the side. >> reporter: the collection will continue through 7 p.m. friday. when it leaves for a distribution center in brooklyn, new york, there's the doubt it will be filled to capacity. audrey barnes, fox 5 news. exactly 22 months ago we started a chapter that has been filled with pain and suffering, but one thing it has not been filled with is anger. >> former congresswoman gabrielle giffords and other shooting victims face the man who tried to kill them today. the judge said jared lee loughner would die in prison after giving him seven life sentences.

fox's dan springer has the story from tucson, arizona. >> jared loughner was sentenced today to multiple terms of life in prison. this sentence assures that will never be released from custody. >> reporter: the 24-year-old convicted killer will never be a free man again. loughner sat quietly in the tucson courtroom thursday refusing to make any statement but listening to the shooting victims and family members affected by his crimes. >> then i turned to mr. loughner and said i hold you -- hold no hatred for you, but i am very, very angry and sick of heart about what you did and the hurt you have imposed on all of us. >> reporter: loughner was handed seven life sentences. six people were killed during his shooting rampage back in january of 2011 and 13 other people were wounded. many victims see this day as a way to close the book including daniel hernandez, credited with saving gabby giffords' life. >> while we may not be able to bring back any of the people

who lost their lives or give back the people who have been injured and heal all of their physical and mental scars, we are able to succeed in finding a resolution and justice in what's happened. >> reporter: the former congresswoman stood up in court. her husband mark kelly spoke for her. his final words directed to loughner, after today after this moment here and now gabby and i are done thinking about you. loughner was diagnosed wizophre and more than a year treated at a missouri facility. today the judge urged he go back to month no to continue his treatment. a show of force by one of the fastest growing political forces in the country, after playing a major role in tuesday's outcome latino voters marched to the white house with a message for president obama. fox 5's tom fitzgerald was there and says all they want now, results. >> reporter: chanting yes, we

years and wants to be a psychologist. >> i like to help people and the maryland dream act has opened so many doors for me and it brightens my future. >> reporter: tuesday president obama captured 71% of the hispanic vote compared to mitt romney's 27%. that is a big dropoff for republicans who as recently as 2004 saw then president george w. bush win 44% of the latino vote after he embraced immigration reform. but folks here say they are reaching out to republicans as well trying to frame immigration reform as a family values issue for hispanic families. >> immigration is one of the most important for us because many families were divided. many kids are alone in this country. so it's for the immigration reform is going to be the solution. >> and to send the congress a message! >> reporter: as election day

researchers found the more time spent sitting, the bigger the area of fat deposited around your heart and that fat didn't go away even with regular exercise. no. 3, the number of adult smokers in the u.s. has declined, but the cdc says too many people still smoke. a recent report shows nearly 44 million adults still smoke and they all found there are fewer heavy smokers today, but the number of people having a few cigarettes a day has risen. no. 2, are your holiday cards ready? the u.s. postal service kicked off the official start to the holiday mailing and shipping season today. they're expected to process about 560 million pieces of mail every single day. that's 18 billion cards, letters and packages. the busiest mailing day is expected to be december 17th. no. 1, did twitter reset your password today? you're not alone. the company is blaming the gaffe on part of a routine security checkup. despite rumors of being hacked, twitter says it wasn't and its security specialists reset a

large number of passwords, larger group than they intended to reset and that's a look at tonight's fox 5 top five. the national aquarium is celebrating the first baby sea turtle ever documented on maryland's eastern shore. usually the weather is too cold during nesting season. the turtles born in maryland don't make it, but this one was rescued from the beach right before hurricane sandy hit. the turtle is seeing medicine and will grow stronger in the aquarium pool before it's released back into the wild. >> maryland has to do that for those little turtles. >> that's nice. probably looking forward to the warm-up. >> cold tonight, though, clear skies, live look outside. we'll see some places dropping to the 20s tonight. it will be a chilly start for your friday morning. friday is still going to be a little below average. the bonus to friday is it won't be as windy and i think the full sunshine from sun up to sundown will be terrific. let's show you the clear skies

over us. high pressure is building in. it's still breezy because we are under the influence of the departing nor'easter and that area of high pressure building in. it's keeping things stirred up a bit. going through the night i expect those winds to lighten up enough for temperatures to drop. look at the clear skies now for jersey and new york. we're getting a little effect around boston and maine. a few more hours and the nor'easter will pull out of town. this is high pressure. all the clear skies you see east of the mississippi and the next big storm and the reason the pattern is changing, it's going to be up in the northern rockies where they're expecting blizzard conditions. now the east will settle down and get warmer. that's the see-saw in the atmosphere. today's high temperature 56 degrees, dulles 55, bwi thurgood marshall 54. we'll be warmer tomorrow and it won't be quite as windy, just a breeze.

our temperature now 47 degrees, down to 41 in gaithersburg, the breeze keeping things stirred up a bit. so while it seem ibis warmer than last night, we -- seems warmer than last night, we do expect these temperatures to drop. binghamton 29, 31 columbus and chicago coming in at 36 degrees. definitely a big chill across the mid-atlantic and the northeast. these overnight temperatures confirm we'll fall to the 20s in many areas, to about 36 degrees in d.c. we are on track for a warm-up, not necessarily tomorrow. people start to snow is saturday as temperatures jump into the 60s. we kick the chilly air out of here and the storminess begins out west. that means mild 60s for us and yes, some of you will probably touch 70 sunday. so it looks like a real nice veterans day. high pressure building in tomorrow, again on the cool side because it will be to our west, but a lot of sunshine and as the high slips off the coast, that's when the warm

stuff gets in here. so mid-60s look very doable saturday. here's your fox 5 accuweather seven-day forecast. 64 saturday after our cool day tomorrow at 57, but nice and bright. sunday looks terrific, 68 or better. monday looks terrific as well at 67 degrees. we'll probably see clouds increasing monday night and overnight we'll have showers, looks like we'll have showers around tuesday. it looks likely and cooler of that front goes by, temperatures in the 50s. so this looks like paradise compared to what they were trying to battle through last night, especially when it comes to soccer. scott's got more. more. this is the verizon sports desk with scott smith. >> nothing in the mls eastern conference semifinal has gone according to plan. hurricanes and nor easters have done their best to prevent d.c. united and the new york red bulls from duking it out, but with clear skies tonight in new jersey we finally got underway. this one scoreless.
